What is Girl Rising?

What is Strong Girls Soar?                                                                   
Strong Girls Soar is a program that empowers girls to find their bold, brilliant, beautiful selves inside and out through yoga, meditation, and deep interpersonal and self-connection. The program will be offered as a two two-week workshops at Yoga Source Los Gatos. Each week will focus on a different aspect of the theme so you can sign up for all four weeks or pick and choose the weeks that work for you. 

Each week will encompass all that the year-long program has to offer, where each girl will 
  • Deepen self-knowing and well-being through yoga and meditation
  • Acquire body knowledge and appreciation
  • Gain awareness of unique strengths and values
  • Identify the elements of healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships (romantic and platonic)
  • Develop self-confidence and self-respect through critical social analysis and lively discussion
  • Build deep and meaningful relationships with other girls

Weeks 1 & 2: June 19th - 23rd & June 26th - 30th     1:30 PM - 3:30PM
Thigh Gaps and Frapps: Diving Deep on Body Image, the Media, and Healthy Eating
Ever wonder why models all have the same body type and shape? Or, have you ever noticed that after you spend a lot of time on social media or looking at magazines you feel a little worse about yourself? In week one of this workshop we take a close look at the role of the media on the self-esteem of women and girls and empower ourselves to do something about it, both personally and globally. During week two we begin to examine our relationships with food and body image. Discussion includes disordered eating patterns, the dangers of "innocent" dieting, negative self-talk, and ends with tools to create new, healthy relationships with food and body image. Mindful eating as well as learning about whole plant nutrition are taught and practiced. Yum! (Note: Please consult your doctor before signing up for this module if you suffer from a diagnosed eating disorder. This program is not intended to be a replacement for professional psychological treatment. )

#ThatsNotLove: Getting Clear on Healthy Relationships
Did you know that one in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner? This figure far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. In this workshop girls will learn how to identify healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships, including romantic as well as platonic relationships (girl-on-girl hate/bullying). We spend time exploring and developing values and desires in personal relationships and identifying pathways to intentionally create those partnerships.
